[texhax] installing new styles with tetex on Linux

This leaves my main tex distribution intact (so that when I upgrade
it I don't need to go in and fiddle, nor run any separate texconfig
    things, etc.)

It's also possible to do this with multiple texmf trees. I don't know
if miktex supports this, but web2c/tetex/texlive definitely do. That is
the focus of the documentation I revised/wrote for the 2003 TL release.

http://tug.org/docs/tldoc/english/livese3.html (and following).

(This doesn't directly address the original question of adding packages
off the net, though.)
