Just place it as the first thing in your PATH settings (usually set in
your .cshrc or .bashrc)

When I did some test installations I used this in my .cshrc (csh syntax)

setenv PATH /home/daleif/TeXLive7/linux/bin/i386-linux:$PATH

Then it works fine.
