If I do

cd /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts
ls -l */*|grep '^d'| awk '{print $NF}'|sort|uniq| wc -l

I get 499 typefaces...well, in theory. Is "TeX comes with 500 fonts" 
anywhere near acceptable (modulo the abuse of the word "fonts")?
