Tlmgr suddenly fails

Hello,

since yesterday I observe a strange error with TLMgr on a Windows 10 
Notebook:

Whenever I call it, it throws me the error message "Back end gone. Last 
command: version" after a while (~ 5-10 seconds after I start it, before 
I can do anything.)

I already successfully called tlmgr update --self --all  (a self-update 
wasn't necessary)

and update-tlmgr-latest.exe

but the error remains.

As far as I can tell, I didn't install any new software lately.

The error isn't  hurting me, because it is possible to update from the 
command line.
