helmholtz-ellis-ji-notation not working in TeX Live 2020

I can't get helmholtz-ellis-ji-notation to find its font in TeX Live
2020.  Here's a minimal reproducer:

    \documentclass{article}
    \usepackage{helmholtz-ellis-ji-notation}
    \begin{document}
    \heji{B}{<e}
    \end{document}

and here's what XeLaTeX reports:

    ! Package fontspec Error: The font "HEJI2Text" cannot be found.

after it tries unsuccessfully to build a Metafont version of HEJI2Text,
which is an OTF font.

This is likely an upstream problem, but I'm not positive.
