    texmf-dist/bibtex/bib/amslatex/*
    texmf-dist/doc/latex/amslatex/*
    texmf-dist/source/latex/amslatex/*
    texmf-dist/tex/latex/amslatex/*

I deleted them all.  I updated amslatex using Heiko's TDS zips, and
using the original AMS directory names (which do not include "amslatex",
interesting enough).  

There are still discrepancies(*), but at least we don't have every file
duplicated now.

(*) Barbara, RobinF -- the two I see quickly are below.  Any ideas?  As
I recall, Heiko said that he used the files from the ams web site,
which, if so, would seem to mean there are discrepancies between ams and
ctan ...
