i have an option for users to generate dvipdfm specific files, and i usethe same
names; i don't want to clutter context with funny prefixes that in the end even
i forget where/when /what they mean;

i'm playing with that and it looks like that works,

so, instead of

   TEXFONTMAPS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/map//

i propose

   TEXFONTMAPS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/map/{$progname,pdftex,dvips,}//

this works with the non duplicate filenames (i.e. the big updmap approach) as
well as program specific approach

i now have a version that does set it (i'v ebeen testign several binaries and
now have the latest version); so adapting the path is a working solution

well, even more bizare is to use no suffix at all (scripts) or to use different
suffixes for the same thing (pattern files etc) so that's no argument -)

sure, and we're discussing/working on that that in a separate thread; probably
next year's tex live will have that solution

Hans

PS. I can fool around in texeec with setting paths and such but that's not so
portable
