why did dek adopt the syntax {...\over...} ?
i have always operated on the assumption that his syntax was based
on the way he linearized formulas when he spoke them into the
telephone. in that environment, "x over y" is certainly more
likely than "fraction with numerator x and denominator y".
although the latter would be more scrutable if the numerator
were at all complicated, i suspect that the simple cases are
much more frequent, and dek wanted his syntax to seem "natural".
(perhaps he overcompensated, knowing himself to be a computer
scientist. <grin>)
