Since you're on OS X, I highly recommend the MacOSX-Tex mailing list:

guidelines, information, and LaTeX/TeX resources.

The list is an invaluable resource for installation issues. I also recommend gwTeX, a complete teTeX distribution with a graphical installer (<http://www.rna.nl/tex.html>).
