re reasons for \mathcode assignments for ctrl-a, etc., i believe
these are artifacts of the keyboard on the sail/waits (decsystem-10)
computer that knuth used when he was first developing tex -- and
indeed until that machine was retired and he shifted to a unix
workstation. if that hypothesis is true, the removal of these
mathcodes shouldn't make any difference to any files prepared
more recently than 1987, and then probably only to files prepared
by knuth himself when he wasn't trying to be "portable".
regarding the mathcodes for space and _, i can't think of a
reason at the moment.
