I don't see any reasonable alternative. If Asymptote would always call
gs before executing any command, that would be a lot of unnecessary
overhead.

The only way to somewhat automate this would be to write out the
setting to some config file during installation of TeX Live. But even
then the user could upgrade either ghostscript alone or the complete
distribution before the next TL release and would just as well end up
with a "broken" asy due to some setting somewhere on the system.
