I am delighted to report that, thanks entirely to the many helpful contributors to these lists, my XeTeX wine list now typesets using LuaTeX.   It may be viewed at https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/pshonfyzp4ca2plia6xbt/Wine-list-LuaTeX.pdf?rlkey=hh6eu9chv7rtz13vyly9x0tov&dl=0

Interestingly, after re-installing the Avenir font, LuaTeX now consistently reports :

luaotfload | db : Reload initiated (formats: otf,ttf,ttc); reason: Font "Avenir LT Std 45 Book" not found.("./Wine list.xlsx.tex") [1{c:/TeX/Live/2024/TeX-MF/Var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap

/pdftex.map}<./Page 1 ground.ai.pdf><./Page-1 (bis, no ground).pdf><./Logo.pdf>

but goes on to typeset the document seemingly correctly and also reports :

<c:/Windows/Fonts/Avenir LT Std 45 Book.otf>
