    I guess that on some systems the "zcat" dodge is necessary.

Yes. Any system not using GNU tar.

    took a gigantic amount of time (10, 12 hours?) 

I added a note that it can take hours. How many depends on how fast your
network is, among other things. I wish it could be faster, but there's
no simple way.
