Ah well, you didn't say that.  Anyhow, using "pplr8t" does indeed 
introduce unacceptable kerning around the "/", which can be addressed 
along the lines of my previous suggestion —

\font \basefont = pplr8t
\basefont
8 b/c
\end

\font \basefont = pplr8t
\basefont
8 b\kern -0,15 em/\kern -0,15 em c
\end
