    How feasible would it be to not configure fontspec to

Fontspec just does \font. It can't control how the lookup happens.

    look in the telive tree and instead use a kpathsearch aliases file?

Maybe texfonts.map rather than aliases.

Anyway, FWIW, my reaction is, "not at all feasible". The idea of somehow
discerning the system names of all fonts, and keeping them up to date,
seems ... impossible.  I also fail to see the benefit of going to all
this work. Certainly nothing I'm going to work on.

If the feature is desired, presumably xetex should support it too. -k
