    1. decide on a name following the fontname pattern (fnnssee[v])

Well, sure, lots of pain to create the support from scratch, but that's
clearly not what the OP was asking about. Merely using a Type 1 font
requires nothing special from the user.

BTW, not that it matters, but nowadays fontools and otftotfm are the
main tools I see being used. fontinst seems to have had its day. -k
