you have a typo in your example so it will not run at all but I assume
that the real issue is that

\\
*

or

\\
[

do not typeset the * or [ as they are the same as \\* or \\[3cm]  with
the star-form or optional argument of \\.

Put \relax or {} or anything else suitable after the \\
