Not at all but as always you can break the rules if you know what you
are doing (and I know what I'm doing:-) and more to the point avoiding
brace groups to help interface to a parser looking for a "1"  is
somewhat outside the scope of what standard latex syntax with
mandatory {} around mandatory arguments is designed to deal with.
