\" is a text accent.  It cannot be used in math mode.  See
Lamport, p. 49.  So there is a choice.
Use \mbox{\"a} (or certain other containers)
or
use a math accent, in this case \ddot{a}.  (\ddot{}
creates a double dot rather than an umlaut, but it looks
roughly similar.)
