This can be changed later.  No need to install again.

It was always required previously, given that you installed TeX Live.
I suppose that you installed MacTeX in the past.

TeX Live supports many systems and there is no common way to adjust
PATH for all of them.

If you're on OS/X, install MacTeX instead of TeX Live.
