My late brother was a computer consultant.  He always said that C was 
defective because it didn't automatically implement range checking. 
Whenever he wrote a program in C, he always added range checking to it. 
Yes, it slowed things down, but it made buffer overflow and all the 
attendant security problems impossible.  Nowadays speed isn't nearly as 
much an issue as it used to be.
