[texhax] best way to revise a large existing text

In general, yes.  Obviously the best thing to do is to cut your file
in half successively to locate the problem.  (Each 50% cut tells you
one bit of information as to the position.  :-)

But be sure that both files run cleanly in LaTeX alone, that could be
a problem if they don't.
