Surely not, Sir : "pretentious /and/ archaic", maybe :-)

For myself, I use "while" to indicate a parallel or
collateral passage of time, whilst I use "whilst" to
indicate a contrast (as in this sentence).  I do not
know if this distinction is also made by others.
