Could you try the same thing on a file containing just

	\relax
	\end

and see if the log file matches the following :

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (Web2C 2009)
**\relax
entering extended mode
LaTeX2e <2009/09/24>

where "LaTeX2e" is the all-important bit ?
