"\hbox{}Nevertheless" does not work. TeX will consider hyphenation at  
non-math glue so the usual solution is "\hspace{0pt}Nevertheless".

See Example 5-2-9 in TLC2. All the examples are available in  
info/examples/tlc2 on your favorite ctan mirror.
