[texhax] TeX commands as abbreviations

And if you want to understand *why* TeX behaves this way, have a look
at the parsing chapters of TeX (not LaTeX) books like TeX by Topic
(available online) or the TeXbook (most university libraries should
have a copy). Even if you don't plan to program in TeX, it helps to
understand, which I always prefer to memorize some strange rules ;-)
