    torch has been passed

Just a point of clarification here. TeX Live and teTeX happily
coexisted for many years.  TL has always been a superset of teTeX;
indeed, when Sebastian (Rahtz) first created TL, he firmly based it on
teTeX. So it's not really a matter of a torch being passed, the torch
was always lit in both places (and many more besides).

It's true that teTeX has been the most visible incarnation of TeX to
most GNU/Linux users in recent years, since it came with virtually every
distribution, and now the distributions are (I gather) switching over to
TL, for the most part anyway. So in that way there is a move toward TL.

But there are a lot of TeX users in the world, especially on other
platforms, who have never needed to use teTeX, perhaps have never even
heard of it, and have always happily used TeX Live, or some other TeX
distribution. And that's fine too :).

Peace amongst multiplicity,
Karl
