[texhax] changing section style

I'm trying to adjust the size of section font.  In my preamble I
have:

\renewcommand{\familydefault}{\sfdefault}{\mdseries}
\renewcommand{\section}{\bfseries}{\Large}

but that doesn't resume \familydefault when the \section
is over, and sections are indented.

Among other things, I looked at 
http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=seccntfmt

\renewcommand*{\@seccntformat}[1]{%
  \csname the#1\endcsname.\quad
}

and tried to put {\bfseries}{\Large} in there, but I get "Missing
\begin" errors...

Is there a direct way to adjust section style?
