I think rtf2latex2e is better:

     ftp://tug.ctan.org/pub/tex-archive/help/wp-conv/rtf2latex2e.html

I.e., you save the Word document as RTF and apply rtf2latex2e to
the result. I used it this year and was very happy about the outcome.
You get "physical" markup thus. For the journal, of course, you must
use \title, \author, \date, \documentclass{article}, \begin{abstract},
\section etc. ("logical" markup).
