1. Maybe your happy enough with \scriptstyle, \scriptscriptstyle,
even \displaystyle; you could have found this via the table of contents
of the LaTeX Companion; cf. TeXbook as well.

2. Moreover, you could use some "pseudo-math":
\mbox inside $...$ or \(...\), usual LaTeX text size commands
inside.
