There are some documents in the .../texmf/doc directory. I don't know
which TeX distribution you're using. teTeX and TeXlive provide a
documentation browser called texdoctk.

The best book is "The LaTeX Companion". It describes "how do modify
the layout safely and correctly".

Robin already told you that, but I'd like to add that you should pay
attention to get the latest edition. It has been released a few
months ago but probably some bookshops try to get rid of the old one.

You really get a lot for your money (abt 1100 pages) and it describes
exactly what you asked for.

Regards,
  Reinhard

Microsoft isn't the answer. Microsoft is the question, and the answer is NO.
