I cheated (RTFM) and went to the first page of Chapter 15 of the 
Metafont book where it says:

    (x,y) slandted s  =  (x+sy,y)

which I find easier to visualize.  :-)

(Since the word here is slanted and not slant, this page does not come 
up under slant in the index.)
