    since there are the *.tfm and *.vf files around that --
    as far as I understood -- make up what (La)TeX thinks of being the
    font(s). 

(La)TeX does not read .vf files, only .tfm's.
It's the DVI drivers which read .vf files.

(In fact, vf files came into existence several years after TeX itself
was basically stable.)



Yes, reading .log files is a good way to get an understanding of what
files are being read.  You can also give various debugging levels, 
such as --kpathsea-debug=-1, to get really detailed information.
