Just a follow-up to Douglas Waud's suggestion, one that works in many
similar crises.  Type 

env | more

any time you seem to be having PATH trouble and you can quickly see
whether you path environment is really being set.  Notice the
order of entries too.  It is easy to get the desired path masked by
an older path that happens to come first.  In your case that would
not seem to be the problem.  

This is not a RedHat problem, or any other kind of Unix problem.
It is normal and intended Unix behavior.
