That really isn't an issue here though, there is no reason to suppose this
hypothetical naive latex user should know plain tex syntax at all and
especially not have read the texbook in such detail as to understand the
parsing differences between macro arguments and subscripts, such that
\fbox\textnormal{x}  parses as \fbox{\textnormal}{x} and is an error but
e_\textnormal{x} parses as e_{\undocumentedinternalmacros{x}}  so makes a
valid subscript
