Install fails due to errors in temp directory

The problem still occurs, but finding a "reproducible path" is
difficult. Also, I don't know how to use tlcritical during an install
from scratch.

Howsoever, it sounds like you identified cause and effect correctly. I'd
trust the changes you made even without testing :-)
