This is a good question. It is one of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Ws
that are basic to problem solving.
Here's an example. Today Martin Preen opened a new thread that reported an
already known issue:
Segmentation Fault while loading format file

Siep Kroonenberg replied, but without supplying a link to the already known
issue:

The already known issue is was reported by Andreas Hirsch:

I say that if we were using github issues then Martin would have found
Andreas's report (of his issue), and would then have added a "me too"
comment.
I think this is a benefit. There is of course a cost to moving to a new
system.
