Thank you Ulrike!  Yes, I found my email of Nov. 7, that was
thoughtless of me.  I now remember that I included the fix in my own
texmf tree. Later, I removed it, probably thinking that it had found
its way into texlive...

Sorry about the noise, everything works again now.
