Problem with figures

as Ulrike already pointed out, you are using a very outdated version of 
graphicx, sitting in $HOME/texmf. Maybe you put it there decades ago and 
had no problem with it all the years.
The best bet would be to rename your ~/texmf to something like 
~/texmf_FromthepreviousMillenium and try it again.

BTW, you are running pdflatex, while you want to include an eps-file. 
That should work, but an intermediate pdf graphics file will be created; 
better run epstopdf on the file.
