Mischa, I am not sure where the misunderstanding lies, but as far as I 
can tell this has nothing to do with TeX Live.  You stated "as you can 
see from the attachment, both '1' and 'a' are first placed in boxes of 
the same height" and I asked "at which point in your code are both '1' 
and 'a' first placed in boxes of the same height  ?".  This question is 
purely about your coding — TeX Live is not involved in any way.
