Ah thanks for the hint. This made me start to look,

I have a garamondx install dating back to 2015 in my texmf-local.

and

Map ugm.map
Map zgm.map

in my local updmap.cfg

but I don't think this should interfer.

In /usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex_dl14.map:
% maintained by updmap[-sys] (multi).
% Don't change this file directly. Use updmap[-sys] instead.

(for pdftex)

I see this

md-gmri7m MathDesign-GM-Regular-Italic-MathItalic-10 <md-gmri7m.pfb
md-gmri7t MathDesign-GM-Regular-Italic-OT1-10 <md-gmri7t.pfb

md-gmr7y MathDesign-GM-Regular-Symbol-10 <md-gmr7y.pfb

I see the same in

/usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/psfonts_t1.map

In

/usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvipdfmx/updmap

I only have a file kanjix.map with nothing related to Garamond.

And in my $HOME I have nothing special

Best,

Jean-François
