[tex-live] LaTeX suddenly stopped working (loop/memory leak?)

I can tell you that the packages in Debian are working correctly, it must be something special on your system.

>From what you wrote it sounds like you had an HD error, or memory that resulted in some corruption.

I'm currently out in the mountains and cannot help much more, but can you please send me the list of files in /etc/texmf/, and all environment variables you have set which might be trusted to TeX, and your path, and the output of which mktexlsr, and any further information.
