I was communicated off-list some info with confirmation that
there is some specific issue with the Perl 5.24 from MacPorts

I can't understand the details but to recapitulate my further experiments:

$ perldoc perldoc

gives bad result

but

$ perldoc -oman perldoc

gives ok result

and also

$ perldoc -M Pod::Perldoc::ToMan perldoc

gives ok result

and also

$ perldoc -M Pod::Perldoc::ToText perldoc

produces ok result (without colours nor bold face)

If I remove from PATH visibility of the MacPorts Perl
I obtain OK result already from

$ perldoc perldoc

without further ado or tinkering

Although surely quite unrelated, let me mention too that from

$ man perldoc

I get

The same is produced from a "man perldoc" with PATH including
the /opt/local/bin
