Yes, building from git is one option, but most distributions are not
happy. Arch is a rolling release distribution (AFAIR) and thus
doesn't care for timings, but most big dists use generally released
versions of software.

Sorry for being unclear - I meant using elpa/M-x package-list-packages is
"not the recommended way for distributions".
