Paulo, I always run those two commands after a TL install/upgrade and I 
got the correct output in both Evince and Xpdf.

My setup: Fedora 26 x86_64 (all updates) + TL2017 (all updates). Just in 
case, that's my Evince version:

[paulo at cambridge ~] $ rpm -qa | grep evince-3
evince-3.24.0-3.fc26.x86_64
