Doesn't work in MikTeX on Windows. What OS and TeX do you use?

Here is what I get:

$ pdflatex "a\space\space a.tex"
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.16 (MiKTeX 2.9)
entering extended mode
! I can't find file `a'.
\space ->

<*> a\space
           \space a.tex
Please type another input file name:
