Thank you for that, George (and for the additional detail, snipped 
here).  I had thought that the VM VHDs were on the disc where TeX is 
stored, but I now see that they are not; they are on external USB 
drives.  So yes, it is a definite possibility that the D: drive is 
failing. I shall know more once the cloning operation is complete.
