Hi Barbara,
you can try this:
\font\sc=cmcsc10
I must admit that I always believed that \sc was defined in plain TeX
but it seems that Lamport added it to LaTeX. Maybe Don Knuth didn't
support small caps deliberately due to their design is poor.
The lowercase glyphs are proportionally scaled-down instances of their
uppercase counterparts, also known as "faked small caps".
If someone on this list doesn't know what I'm talking about, look at
http://vntex.sourceforge.net/fonts/samples/urwvn-test.pdf
On the last page, search for the line with the PostScript name
"VnTeXPalladioL-SC". This line contains *real* small caps (designed
by Ralf Stubner). The line above contains *faked* small caps. IMO
the latter are awful and should be avoided.
I'm sure that Don Knuth didn't mention his small caps font in the
TeXbook because he was/is aware of its poor design.
