Thanks for the report (and sorry for the delayed reply).

    The Transfig bug has been fixed in 3.2.5e, so regenerating the png
    files with a new version of Transfig/Xfig should do the job. Of
    course just truncating the files also works just fine (I have
    attached truncated versions),

Unfortunately, the transfig available on my system isn't new enough.
Rather than struggle with compiling for source or finding a newer
version, I just installed your .png replacements in TeX Live -- thanks
for providing them.  In the event that the notes package is ever updated
again (dates from 2002 ...), perhaps I'll have the new transfig as a
matter of course.
