[Wearing the FreeType maintainer hat] Unfortunately, FreeType's
weakest point is the hinting of Type1 fonts.  While CFF fonts are
handled extremely well due to the new engine contributed by Adobe,
Type1 still uses the old, original engine that has some severe bugs
not resolved yet due to lack of time.  So there *might* be bugs
related to FreeType, but not necessarily, of course.  To test that I
suggest to extract the fonts from the PDF and run one of the FreeType
demo programs (e.g. `ftview') for detailed inspection.
